The Realm project is one of the largest multi function private developments in the ACT. The Realm includes a five star hotel, restaurants, shops and corporate offices, art gallery and 250 apartments surrounding a central park.
 
According to Marcus Graham of Colin Stewart Architects, the Architecture of the clarity of form, shape, scale and design of the entire precinct is not arbitrary but directly responsive to the city form and urban structure surrounding it.
 
“A formal geometry of surrounding roads dictate a formal pattern of new buildings laid out and enclosing a major urban parkland as the central focus for the 10 building complex,” Colin said. “In a similar way the three building blocks which combine to make up the hotel building group also form the enclosure and edges to the major atrium at the heart of the hotel itself.”
 
“AcoustiShield plasterboard was selected to achieve the acoustic requirements of the atrium. This space is designed to welcome hotel and conference guests and often features live music. Lafarge AcoustiShield with slotted profile was selected to compliment the strong geometric lines of the hotel & atrium. The plasterboard also forms the backdrop to a dramatic sculpture of powder coated aluminum, by internationally renowned artist Robert Foster, which is suspended within the atrium.
 
The benefits to the environment through design range from the broader planning concept for the entire multi use development vision through to detail design considerations and decision making. At the outset, the urban design imperative was to maximize the density and multi use idea to make a new community focus in the heart of Barton on the edge of the Central National Area. At the detail level, the emphasis on utilization of natural light, national ventilation and solar access have largely determined the expression and form of the Hotel Realm.
