The completion of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Stage 3 Development includes the reconstruction of the front entry building to create new ward configurations for 150 beds, replacing existing substandard wards in the Main building block of the hospital. As Victoria’s second largest adult trauma centre the construction of a helipad on the roof is a major benefit to the hospital and for the statewide trauma service. This stage of the long-term redevelopment will continue the process of grouping outpatient services on the same floors and horizontal groupings between other building blocks. With Australia’s largest biotechnology facility, Bio21, situated in the heart of the redevelopment, maintaining a smart presentation throughout the hospital buildings is essential for creating that first impression with visitors and for the well being of patients. Specifying building systems incorporating durable, low-maintenance materials, which allow for a smooth painted finish has been very important. Lafarge Plasterboard was able to assist by providing GIB Toughline® impact resistant systems that are able to withstand the tough demands of the daily flow of large numbers of users and hospital equipment.
