Do it yourself home renovations are not all smooth sailing, as current reality TV programs would have us believe, which is why Lafarge Plasterboard was pleased to part of The Terraces Project.
The Terraces Project showed the transformation process of two derelict terraces in Melbourne's inner city into two very different examples of 21st century living. The objective of this project was to showcase good architectural design, stimulate the public's imagination, and provide an in- depth look at the design and construction process. Importantly, it provided a realistic look at what's really involved in home renovations and emphasised the benefits of planning correctly.
Lafarge Plsterboard was keen to work on a project whose architectural construction objectives included Lafarge Plsterboard's environmentally sustainable development principles; that is designs incorporating low maintenance, durable and easy to install materials that provide security, privacy and comfort for consumers and at the same time using flexible and adaptable materials that meet the changing technology and functionality needs of the building.
Archicentre was able to use a number of Lafarge Plasterboard products, with the assurance of quality and expert technical advice and assistance with all their project needs. Both terraces used Watershield for the wet area wall linings. Terrace 2 is using Fireshield for its new boundary wall for its fire rating properties. The terraces also feature Lafarge Plasterboard's Soundshield System, which provides improved noise reduction within adjoining areas of the home.
According to Mr Robert Caulfield, Managing Director of Archicentre, this is increasingly important as State Governments push to increase density in capital cities. "Many people spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on apartments for waterfront views or special locations in inner city areas, could be in for a sound shock. We are increasingly being asked to look at noise problems in apartments, units and flats. The main issue is that people have committed the purchase the property or have moved in before they carry out a noise assessment."
The Terraces Project is an Archicentre project in partnership with the Building Commission and the City of Melbourne. Lafarge Plasterboard is one of the project's sponsoring product partners.
